Architectural distinction of the Canton Solothurn 2016, commendation
The municipality of Kappel faces population growth, which poses new challenges for the authorities. More residents also means more children – and these will want to be accommodated and taught in a modern manner. With a new structure and conversion of the primary school building, this challenge was accepted, while already bearing the next generation in mind.
The new schoolhouse completes the sequence of public buildings along Schulhausstrasse and adds a distinctive new statement to the ensemble. The new structure is quite naturally combined with the existing structures to form a unit, adhering to the logic of the projecting roofs that were already in place. The structure is formed in a way that contrasts with what was built in 1964.
On the base of the new building, there are three terraces, each of which is associated with two classrooms and their group room. The terraces are part of the exterior layout and provide protected common areas for outdoor learning. A large rotunda hall, illuminated from above and situated in the middle of the building, provides access and serves as a break hall, shielded from the weather.
Structurally, the rotunda's roof resembles a dome construction: the forces are bundled in a round exposed-concrete band with a diameter of 8 m, lending this central space its unique character. With this architectural load-bearing framework concept, the slab thickness can be reduced to an economical 26 cm. The pre-existing schoolhouse was renovated, converted and made earthquake-resistant without any major interventions in the support system.
The Minergie-certified schoolhouse is equipped with controlled ventilation. Automatic control of natural and artificial light means that it is in line with modern technology.
Canton Solothurn acknowledged this light-flooded pavilion school with multifunctional break hall in a commendation.
